Volunteering

Volunteering with Temcare can be life-changing!

Volunteering can make you feel connected, valued, and closer to your faith. Whether you want to give back to your community, help families in need, or bring a smile to a child’s face, volunteering with Temcare is life-changing.

At Temcare, we provide volunteering opportunities to build positive and meaningful relationships with young people through our Mates Mentor program and to create positive environments and experiences for children as a Respite Carer. This is also an opportunity to support families when they need it the most.

Thinking about volunteering and not sure where to start?

There is never any pressure to start immediately, and you likely want to get to know us as much as we want to get to know you.

Which of our volunteering programs appeals to you the most?

  • Mates Mentoring – connecting adult Christian volunteer mentors with young people aged between 10 and 15 years of age.
  • Respite Care – short-term respite care provides a much-needed break for families while offering their children a caring environment.
  • General Support – if you’re not able to commit to regular volunteering but would like to help by driving children to and from their weekend placements, assisting with our camps or driving family members to their appointments – contact us for a chat to find out more or complete our online application form.

Mates Mentoring

Mates one-to-one mentoring is very rewarding! A Christian Mates Mentor Volunteer not only becomes a positive role model for a young person but also gets to share and experience life’s journey with them. Sometimes a young person just needs someone to listen and, at other times, a friend to share in everyday activities. As you bond with your mentee, Temcare is here to support you every step of the way.

What is the role of a Mentor?

Through regular activities, the Temcare Mentor aims to build a positive and meaningful relationship with young people, making a difference on a behavioural, personal, and spiritual level.

Does this sound like you?

You have a personal relationship with Jesus and demonstrate it in everyday life. You consider yourself a good listener, and you are patient. You can be supportive when a child needs you and flexible in your approach. A mentor needs to be respectful of the child and family, and equally as important reliable and consistent with your time.

What would I need to do as a Mates Mentor?

  • Take the lead in supporting the mentee through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship
  • Serve as a positive role model and friend
  • Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together
  • Organise low-cost activities for the mentee
  • Demonstrate a mutual respect for the mentee and their parent/guardian
  • Report all forms of contact to the Mates coordinator
  • Attend the Temcare orientation training
  • Participate in a 2-hour training session twice yearly
  • Attend optional group outings with other mentors and mentees
  • Help mentees make positive changes and reach academic, social, career and personal goals.

Respite Care

A Christian Respite Care Volunteer helps those families in need by providing much-needed care and stability for their child or children. At Temcare, we take the time to match you with a family and a child that complements your life skills. Our trained social workers provide the support you need, and we spend time ensuring you and the family are comfortable with the match. Sometimes our families just need someone to give them a break or spend time on activities to help the children navigate life.

What is the role of a Respite Carer?

Through regular contact with the child, a respite carer volunteer provides a positive relationship, environment, and experience for the child.

Does this sound like you?

You have a personal relationship with Jesus and demonstrate it in everyday life. You consider yourself a good listener, and you are patient. You can be supportive when a child needs you and flexible in your approach. A respite carer needs to be respectful of the child and family, and equally as important, be reliable and consistent with your time.

What would I need to do as a Respite Volunteer?

  • Support the child’s family when it is possible to do so
  • Be a positive role model, and show children that others care
  • Provide a happy and loving home and a family environment, demonstrating conflict management and nurturing self-esteem
  • Broaden the child’s life experiences by offering them a variety of positive activities
  • Attend Temcare orientation training
  • Participate in a 2-hour training session twice yearly
  • Report all forms of contact with the child and the family to the Respite Care Coordinator
